An Open Discussion – Differences between Callout and Web-based Music Surveys – Why are the results so different? Part One – We need answers! The programming minds that steer the content of the radio station are in a music meeting. It’s decision time. Your Callout research says a song on the playlist is negative and driving listeners away. But your Web survey says listeners like the song. Which one is right? Regardless of how you deal with these dilemmas, you might also ask yourself, “Why?” Why does Callout data look different from Web research data? There are many opinions around Radio, but little has been studied or written on the subject. We think this topic is worth exploring and talking about. Kelly Music Research is taking a closer look at Callout and Web surveys. We also want to create an open forum among our broadcasting brethren and encourage your participation. In Radio we have a wealth of brainpower among programmers, consultants and researchers. Collectively, we can certainly create an interesting conversation. And who knows… maybe discovery. Over the past several months we’ve begun laying the groundwork for this conversation. We’ve done parallel music tests using different methods and approaches. Many of you have actual experiences we hope you’ll share. This is an open conversation that we hope will be informative and productive. Incidentally – full disclosure – Kelly Music... Read More

MadTV paradies Morning Shows

This contains some rough language and inuendo, but overall it’s pretty much what the public thinks of our goofy morning show nicknames and antics. MadTV started their show with a paradoy within a parody. First Nancy Grace is mocked for her over-the-top reporting, but her subject of the night is the alleged capsizing of a cruise ship carrying various morning show teams…. swfobject.embedSWF("http://www.youtube.com/v/X1n1tEwAc1o&rel=0&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=0", "vvq-128-youtube-1", "425", "344", "10", vvqexpressinstall, vvqflashvars, vvqparams, vvqattributes); Read More →
Choosing The Right Jingles
March 1, 2008 by Bob Thornton

Good jingles create a unique identity and put an individual touch on your station’s sound. Like the music you play, the musical style and attitude of the jingles let listeners know what they can expect from your station. Like anything else you buy, there are some basic things to consider before making your selection. The first step is to choose a package that closely resembles the sound or attitude of the image you want to project. When listening to syndicated jingle packages, pay more attention to the actual sound of the music tracks rather than the format category the package may be grouped into on the demo. Keep in mind that your own lyrics could change the complexion of the entire package. For instance, if the package you like best says Today¹s Best Country but the tracks are very contemporary and would suit your AC sound, a simple lyric change could make this the perfect package for you. Also, if the lyrics you’ve chosen don’t perfectly match the original package syllable-for-syllable, don’t worry. There are many ways, within reason, to alter the vocal arrangements for a good fit. Jingles can help the flow of your station. They can launch music sweeps out of stopsets, bridge tempo changes, introduce news and traffic reports, punctuate promos and add excitement to special features. Be sure to consider how your jingle cuts will be used in the format, then make sure the package you select has the elements you need. You... Read More

YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you turn up the radio excitedly at the sound of dead air on your competitor’s station. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you have 37 unlabeled 15 minute cassettes in your back seat. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you listen to the radio “invertedly”, turning up the volume during promos, sweepers, and talksets, and flipping to another station during music. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you drive around aimlessly looking for an unlit 4 tower array just to see it. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you swear at the competition while driving when you hear a song they beat you to. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you tell someone you plan to go to lunch “coming up next hour”. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you have 125 unopened CDs you’ll never listen to but, never more than $3 cash. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you use phrases like “If I was programming the music, I would NEVER/ALWAYS/etc…” YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you have lived in six cities in eight years. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF… you remember what “When you play it, say it!” means. YOU MIGHT BE IN RADIO IF……You get excited at sunset and drive by the towers just to hear the phase shift.
